This Is Rad!

Hey Rad Boy! This week on the show Kyle and Matthew welcome musician Brandon Niznik for an in depth look at one of culture's most misunderstood musical genres. Kyle and Brandon first met in college and quickly bonded over a love of vintage reggae music. Brandon is an incredibly accomplished reggae musician and his musicianship is only rivaled by his incredible knowledge of the genre. They explore the roots of reggae music in Jamaica and trace it's evolution from Ska and Rocksteady into it's own unique style They explore how reggae changed the way people look at music production and the impact reggae has had on musicians around the world. It's easy to look at reggae and just think of dudes playing “red red wine” on a cruise ship but there is some really incredible music out there for you to explore if you're down to dig deep. And Brandon gives you some great places to start. It's been a while since we've really nerded out about music and this one gets real deep.

Please check out Brandon's new musical project Wise Owl and their new ep “The World's on Fire”

Brandon made a Spotify playlist of all the music we talked about in this episode!

Welcome to Flavortown! This week on the show Kyle, Matthew, and Laura welcome longtime listener and baker Jesse Rivera to chat about The Food Network. Well... sort of. It turns out the Food Network could be the subject of a whole series of podcasts, so not unlike many episodes before, this is the first in what will likely be a long series of Food Network episodes. But we get into it. We all confess our true feelings for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. We discuss Robert Irvine's terrifying monster arms. We debate Chopped versus Cutthroat Kitchen. (Something that if feels like we could do a whole episode on.) Plus, there are some pretty insane tangents including a pretty solid breakdown of the Xbox game “Steel Battalion.” Bleach the tips of your hair, scream “bam” as you throw around some spices, and enjoy the madness!

Weekly Rads:

(with special guests Katie and Becky!)

Kyle: The Outsider by Stephen King (book)

Becky: Tokyo Ghoul (manga)

Katie: That video of the lady falling into the grapes (classic youtube video)

Order up! This week Kyle and Burnside are joined by the brilliant and hilarious Andrea Allan and Emily Lubin of the Hot Mess Comedy Hour to chat about the wonderful world of diners. For some they're just a place to get a quick bite but for others, the diner can be a sacred space. They chat about do's and don'ts for ordering at a diner. They point out regional differences and what makes a good diner. Andrea and Emily discuss some of their favorite diners in New York City and Kyle and Matt give them some tips on how to get the most out of their time on the west coast. Should you get to know your waiters and waitresses? Plus, you get some real deep discussion of the age old debate of pie versus cake. So head on over to your favorite all night eatery, order some chicken fingers, and enjoy!

Weekly Rads:

Kyle: Oh man the future by De Lux (song)

Matthew: The Week Of (movie)

Laura: The White Album by Weezer (album)

Brandon Niznik (intro guest): Evil Genius (TV series)

Yes, this not a bit. This week on This Is Rad Kyle and Matthew welcome back returning guest (and national treasure) Becky Joiner along with the brilliant Katie McCarty to discuss the Real Housewives spinoff show Vanderpump Rules. Normally either Kyle or Matthew bring some level of knowledge about a subject to an episode but the sheer level of enthusiasm our guests have for this show inspried us to take the plunge and break down this bananas crazy Bravo reality show. Thrill as we learn the true meaning of “pasta”! Speculate as to how much VD Jax has! Katie brought beers and we have ourselves a pretty great time and the episode gets very very silly. Even if you're not a fan of Bravo's reality programing, this episode has some pretty glorious moments.

Weekly Rads:

Kyle and Matthew: Avengers: Infinity War (movie)

Laura: A Series of Unfortunate Events (TV Show)

All tremble before the Infinity Rad! It's that time again. This Is Rad's resident Marvel man Jeremy Scippio returns for our 4thstate of the union of the MCU. This was recorded days before the release of Infinity War and the boys lay out what they think will happen in Marvel's most epic movie to date. Now that it's out check out what the boys got wrong (and maybe a few things they got right...) and hear their takes on Guardians 2, Black Panther, and the Netflix shows (Not a ton of Agents of Shield talk sadly... look there are only so many hours in a day.) Jeremy continues to be one of our favorite recuring guests and you should check him out if he's touring near you because he is a brilliant comic. Plus, as a bonus, on the intro Burnside recounts his and Laura's trip to Huntington Beach for the Back to the Beach Ska Festival. That's right, super nerdy comic book talk AND super nerdy music talk. We're aggressively on brand this week.

Weekly Rads:

Matthew: Back To The Beach Ska Festival (music festival) (also God of War is still pretty good...)

Kyle: The Brazillian Girls – Let's Make Love (album)
