Kyle and Matthew are joined by their podcast friends from the great white north Richard Eden and Reid Vanier of the Doctor DC podcast. Together they celebrate the great perennial number two of the comic book industry, DC Comics. Now, we know what you're thinking “make mine Marvel or GTFO” but hear us out... What if DC was secretly the coolest comic book company and we all just never noticed? Turns out beyond Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman there is a dense and rich history of really cool (and often really WEIRD) characters and stories. If you've never been into DC or have wondered where to start, we give some fun ideas. If you're a longtime DC fan, we go deep on some fun stuff in the DC canon. We also for sure missed some stuff because the DC universe is vast, so tweet at us with YOUR favorite DC books or let us know if you end up checking out anything we recommend. This week Kyle and Matthew welcome Tara McKinney to the show. Kyle met Tara years ago when she started working as a camera operator on Talking Dead. Over the years they've become friends and it turns out Tara is a hell of a writer. This is her first podcast and while we never quite nailed down a topic we ended up on a pretty solid groove for a conversation. The title comes from the fact that if Kyle or Matt got too nerdy Tara would just space out and think about girls. She's really fun and this was a great last episode before rad goes into quarantine.
Concerning all the health issues, This Is Rad wants to you know we've set up plans so that unless like the whole grid goes down, we will still be bringing you episodes every week. What those look like is going to be a fun learning experience for all of us, but we just want you to know that for as long as every body is cooped up at home (or out in the world, if you're still out working) that we will be right here with you. This week Kyle and Matthew welcome Khalid Salaam for a chat about the living dead and their place in pop culture. Khalid explains his parents unorthodox use of horror movies as a tool for punishing him as a child. But that which scares you as a kid often draws you in with fascination as you get older. Kyle and Khalid have worked together in various capacities over the years and despite the fact that they both work on a show about re-animated corpses, they explore a much broader scope of the zombie. We talk classic (and underrated) movies. The best (and not the best) video games. Turns out there are books about zombies. There is a lot of zombie media out there to choose from and they give you some picks for their favorites. But part of the appeal of the zombie narrative is the concept of “survival horror” and the boys explore this topic quite a bit as well. Plus, we got our fair share of hot riffs. Even if you are sick to death of zombie BS in pop culture this episode might remind you that there was once a time where the “Z” word did no elicit groans and eye rolls. Go back with us to a simpler time...

This week, Kyle and Matthew try something a little different. They welcome Anna Jean to the studio, a comedian whom neither Kyle or Matt had met before. She'd contacted Kyle about doing the show after a previous guest said doing This Is Rad is a fun time. A couple of FB messages later and here we are. After about five minutes you'd have no idea that we'd never met Anna before because everybody becomes best friends as we riff on video games, comedy, and her topic Cooking. Anna's mom tried to each her some classic Haitian dish when she was growing up and she wasn't interested, now she spends a ton of her time trying to learn to cook via youtube. It's a fun journey from a very funny comedian and a new member of the extended TIR family.

No! Don't run away! This is a super interesting episode I swear! For a few years Kyle has been trying to get our guest Ray Camacho to come on for this topic. Ray is in a super rad band called Sacer and studied theology in college. These two passions have lead to him having an impressive knowledge of faith based punk bands. Religious punk has been around almost as long as punk. The idea feels inherently contradictory and yet numerous subcultures and subgenres exist and thrive today. We chat about different faiths and the bands that have come out representing them. We also just have some interesting chats about the ideas of religion and the complicated relationship between religion and culture. Its a different kind of episode but I swear it's got lots of good bits and riffs.

As is tradition, a new numbered Star Wars film has been released, we have waited a month, and now we have gathered with our official Star Wars experts Klee Wiggins and Ed Greer for a rousing chat about the state of the Star Wars universe. This is the first time we've all gotten together since The Last Jedi so expect some chat about Solo. Plus, some Star Wars show on a Disney streaming service appears to be pretty good. This episode isn't so much a review as much as an excuse to really get in an dissect the evolution of the most popular film franchise of all time and what it means to be a franchise in 2020.
